LORNA
Itâs a little disconcerting to see that the sun has risen over New York as I make my way out of the police station to begin my journey back to the hotel. As far as I knew, it was still dark outside, but thatâs mainly because there were no windows in the police station. But now Iâve seen that a new day has dawned, it only makes my situation seem worse. Maddy and Alex have been missing for a whole night now, and with a new day beginning, Iâm left wondering how many sunsets and sunrises I will have to go through before I see them again, if ever.
âThank you,â Jack says as the police officer who will be driving us back to our hotel opens the door for us to allow us into his vehicle.
I follow Jack into the back of the car, and once the door is shut and the driver is in position, we begin our route back to the hotel. Itâs that time of the morning when itâs early enough for the buzz of the city to have begun but not quite late enough for the roads to be snarled up with traffic, and Iâm grateful for that because I want this journey to be quick. The longer Iâm cooped up in this car, the more Iâm going to be trapped with my thoughts, and that cannot be a good thing.
âEverything will be okay,â Jack says to me as he takes my hand and gives it a squeeze, but I donât even look at him as he speaks. I just keep my eyes on the window and on the people we are passing on the sidewalk. Iâm so envious of them all because they are unburdened by the woes I have. Their hearts havenât been ripped out by losing their children in a vast city, and they arenât waiting to be alone so they can start crying. Theyâre just on their way to work, probably thinking about that TV show they watched last night or which restaurant to try and make a reservation at this weekend. Such simple things, and things I used to be occupied with too. But now my concerns run far deeper, and as the car travels on, I find myself hating these people for how easy their lives are compared to mine.
Without really thinking about what Iâm doing, I remove my hand from Jackâs grip, separating myself physically from him, which is hardly a supportive thing for a wife to do, but itâs just what I felt like doing. He says my name in an attempt to get me to look at him then, but I ignore that too and keep my head turned away from him, my eyes on the streets outside and not on the man who is suffering just as much as I am.
Jack rather sensibly doesnât try to talk or touch me again until we have got to where we are going, no doubt aware that to do so may result in a dangerous argument that the police officer in the front could hear.
